I dag er det Dalai Lamas fødselsdag. Den farverige og verdenskendte munk fylder 80 år.

Tenzin Gyats, som er hans borgerlige navn, blev født d. 6. juli 1935. Han er den 14. Dalai Lama og er den åndelige leder inden for tibetansk buddhisme.

Dalai Lamas status som verdensberømthed blev for alvor en realitet, da han modtog Nobels Fredspris i 1989.

Dalai Lamas besøg i Danmark i februar i år vakte stor debat, da den daværende SR-regering valgte ikke at modtage Dalai Lama officielt. Dette skyldtes angiveligt, at det ville skade de diplomatiske forbindelser til Kina.

Under sit besøg afholdt Dalai Lama blandt andet et foredrag om medfølelse, samhørighed, fred og tolerance i Bella Center på Amager.
