10 år efter den altødelæggende tsunami

For nøjagtig ti år siden ramte en af verdens værste naturkatastrofer Det Indiske Ocean og dræbte over 230.000 mennesker. Se før- og efterbillederne fra de ødelagte områder

Indonesien blev hårdest ramt af tsunamien i 2004. Anden juledag 2004 er en dag, mange sent vil glemme.

Et jordskælv, der forårsagede en af vor tids værste naturkatastrofe, ramte 14 lande i Det Indiske Ocean og kom fuldstændig bag på seismologerne.

Den efterfølgende tsunami dræbte over 230.000 mennesker og udløste sorg i store dele af verden.
 
Tsunamien, der ifølge det amerikanske geologiske institut, USGS, udledte samme energi som 23.000 Hiroshima-atombomber, førte til ekstreme ødelæggelser.

Værst gik det ud over Indonesien, Sri Lanka, Indien og Thailand.

Herhjemme fulgte mange danskere chokeret med i udviklingen på tv, og et massivt hjælpearbejde blev sat i værk.

Ønsket om at hjælpe de mange nødlidende efter tsunamien var stort.

For eksempel gav private danskere mere end 40 millioner kroner til UNICEFs hjælpearbejde, og på verdensplan blev der i alt samlet 14 milliarder dollar ind til nødhjælp og genopbygning.

75 procent af de indsamlede midler kom fra private bidragydere.

I dag - 10 år efter katastrofen - er store dele af de ramte områder tilbage til normalen, men tsunamien har sat store ar i sjælen på befolkningen, der i dag mindes de dræbte ved mindeceremonier.

I dag mindes man verden over de næsten 250.000 mennesker, som blev dræbt af tsunamien i 2004, ved en række ceremonier.
